Volunteers Week
Date of news/blog: 9th June 2023IT”s Volunteers Week, a wonderful opportunity to mark the fantastic and positive contribution volunteers make across the country.
At Dormy Care Communities, we particularly value to contribution of volunteers both from within our homes and from the local communities around them.
Many of the ladies and gentlemen who live in our homes use their vast knowledge, skills and experience to enhance the lives of others in voluntary ways every day. They act as ‘champions’ for a huge selection of the activities enjoyed in the homes; taking the lead on so many different pastimes including, for example, gardening, music, arts and literature.
They use their experience and knowledge to lead clubs and host sessions for the others who live in the home to enjoy each week. The positive impact of these voluntary sessions cannot be underestimated; the passion our champions have for their subjects not only ensures the sessions are fascinating and much enjoyed, it helps interest in the subjects flourish, perhaps introducing a new friend to something they have never tried before.
As well as our ‘in-house’ champions, our homes also benefit from the contribution of many volunteers from around the community. As well as regular visits from local Girl Guides, Brownies and Scout groups (always much enjoyed!) some people who are the loved ones of the ladies and gentlemen also make a voluntary contribution; for example one person’s loved one is leading a monthly “Men’s Club” for the gentlemen of the home.
Some ladies and gentlemen choose to spend more of time in their room or may not be able to get ‘out and about’ quite as much as a result of mobility or health difficulties. For them, visits from volunteers are a lovely chance to meet with and chat to different people, share a story, a laugh and a cup of tea.
The positive contribution volunteers – both from within our homes and from our local communities – make in our homes is very much valued and always appreciated. So this Volunteers Week, we would like to say a huge thank you to them all.
